MOVIE REVIEW: #GetOut - ⭐⭐⭐1/2
Any fan of @comedycentral’s popular sketch show #KeyAndPeele knows its star duo are huge movie buffs, especially #JordanPeele, who credits #horror as his favorite genre. It shows in many of their sketches which incorporate elements of the genre by never backing down from their genuinely unnerving tone, convincing me that Peele would have the passion and chops to make a kick-ass horror movie.
As it turns out, I was right.
In Peele’s directorial debut, “Get Out,” British #BlackMirror favorite #DanielKaluuya plays Chris, a young black man nervous to meet his white girlfriend’s (#AllisonWilliams) parents (#BradleyWhitford and #CatherineKeener). Chris’ paranoia only grows when the odd behavior of the family’s black live-in servants, among other disturbing red flags, causes him to suspect something sinister is at play.
Peele’s script plays out like a modern day #TheStepfordWives, commenting on the subject of racism in lieu of gender stereotypes to create a complex and unapologetically satirical film, a take on the genre that comes rarely today. But one of the more impressive aspects of the film’s construction is its encouragement for audience interaction, which is why group viewings are highly recommended.
Any true horror fan owes it to themselves to, as the title suggests, get out, go to the nearest theater and experience the best thriller of the year so far. Who knew the other half of Key & Peele would become one of the most promising filmmakers of his generation?
